When adware programs or PUPs get installed to your browser, they will generate pop-up ads, display advertising banners or even changing your home page and default search engine. If your browser redirects to the wrong page when you type a URL into the address bar or perform a search via search engine, your computer is experiencing an infection due to spyware or other malicious software. These redirects are not only annoying, but can prevent you from completing home or school work, or even finding solutions to the issue itself. When facing this sort of challenges, programs like Windows Defender or Spybot can be used to solve these challenges.
Things You'll Need
- Windows Defender
- Spybot
- Windows Defender
Step 1
Launch Windows Defender on your computer. It installs automatically with newer versions of Windows but you can download it for free from Microsoft's site if your computer does not have it.
Step 2
Click the down arrow next to the "Scan" button and select "Full Scan" to scan your entire computer.
Step 3
Click "Remove," "Review" or "Ignore" when a pop-up appears for each infection found. You can click "Ignore" to deal with the entries at the end of the scan or "Remove" to delete infections as you go.
Step 4
Click the "Remove All" button when the entries are checked, after the scan finishes. To treat each entry separately, select the option to remove, quarantine or ignore from the drop down list next to the item and then click "Apply Actions."
Step 5
Close Windows Defender when finished.
Spybot
Step 1
Install Spybot: Search & Destroy on your computer. During the installation, you can choose to also install TeaTimer, if you want real-time support in addition to the ability to scan and treat infections.
Step 2
Click "Next" to page through the wizard, which will only appear the first time you use the program. Select the option to search for updates when it appears. Click a location near you in the list and click "Continue." Click the "Download" button to save updates to your computer and click "Exit" to leave the updates screen.
Step 3
Select the "Check for problems" button in Spybot's main window and click "Yes" to allow Spybot to delete temporary files (this will increase the speed of the scan). Wait for the scan to complete.
Step 4
Check any entries that are red, which indicates they are real threats that you should delete, and click the "Fix selected problems" button from the top of the screen. You can also select entries in green if you would like to delete them but these are not critical.
Step 5
Click the "Immunize" option from the navigation, after deletion finishes, to block known spyware from your browsers. Close Spybot after immunization.
Tips and Warnings
- Run anti-malware scans one at a time to avoid conflicts.
- Although you can run multiple anti-malware programs, running two or more stand-alone anti-virus programs may cause conflicts. Pick only one anti-virus solution.
- Spybot has a resident real-time scanner, called TeaTimer, that will search for registry changes and other signs of infections as they occur. With TeaTimer, you can block these infections before they gain footing in your computer.
